Do you have to use generic tickets to get into events at Gen Con that you didn't buy in advance or is cash good?

You need Generics or tickets to other events from the same year (which can be used like Generics). GMs cannot accept cash.

Thanks. Follow up, I'm assuming generics can be bought on site during the event?

Yes. You can buy generic ticket during Gen Con. The cost per generic ticket is $2. So, for example, if you are attending an event that is listed at $6, that will cost you three generic tickets.

There should be several areas set up around the convention center than can hook you up with generic tickets. If you're in the Magic hall, you (likely) won't have to walk all the way back to the main ticket booths.

Are there events that won't accept Generics even if they have no-shows?

There may be, but they are usually rare events that require pre-show planning, either in getting special equipment or other pre-clearance activity.
So, generally: no.
