I've always just found a couple people and asked if they wanted to p,any a board game. I just recently started playing miniature games. I saw many tournaments but I' not ready for those. Is there an open miniature gaming area? I was thinking of bringing malifaux and guild ball.

These responses are SO GREAT. I really appreciate this information. Gen Con can be overwhelming.
Just remember that you won't be able to see everything no matter what, so take the time to enjoy what you're doing when you're doing it. I've got a twitter bot set up as well, for GMs to tweet when they need players. We'll certainly be using it for our LARPs, I'll dig up the info and post it here soon.

It's intended to be used by anyone who wants to use it, for any events. :)
It's a simple bot, players just follow it, and GMs tweet out requests for players with certain hashtags. The bot just retweets all of those GM tweets so those following it can get them.

I would also encourage you to seek out the side rooms - TMG has had one, Asmodee, Rio Grande, and the Kickstarter room.
All of these are fantastic for getting a real expert to teach you through the first turn and then you get to play through the whole game.
Is there a place to get more info on what's going on in these rooms? Are tickets required?

If tickets are required for something, it will be listed in the registration system.
Most companies or groups that get their "own" room are mainly running normal ticketed events inside and operate like anywhere else.
Some, like Rio Grande, are more free-form and don't have a set schedule, usually. Sometimes those are still listed in the registration system as a "no tickets are required" event, but not always.
Basically, if a schedule isn't in the system, then either it's still being processed or there is no schedule (and thus no tickets) and if you want more details on what will be in the room, you will need to contact the company directly to inquire.

Is there a place where people game all day outside of the convention itself?

You can find people running games in some of the lobby areas of hotels downtown.

What's this in the just published catalog?
OPEN GAMING You’ve asked and Gen Con has delivered. Tables are available as a gamer oasis for you and your friends to play games. Available Thursday - Saturday 8 am - 2 am and Sunday 8 am - 3 pm. Game on!

There are some tables in the hallway to Lucas Oil that are set aside for gaming, so folks can squat there if they want to set up.
We will have plenty of tables in the main event hall for pick-up games to use as well, just check in with the Event HQ for availability, as usual.
