1983, Gen Con 16.
First year, went one day as a day trip, my parents dropped me and my cousin off there and we explored the Con on a $4 dollar "spectator" badge. Spent the day seeing games I'd never even heard of and learning new games at demos in the exhibit hall. Completely overwhelming experience - I was immersed in an environment with "my people".
I was sold on conventions and gaming ever since.
"My people"...heh. That's basically how I feel whenever I go to a convention, but ESPECIALLY when I go to Gen Con - it's like I've been around aliens for 361 days and I only get to be around my people for less than a week. XD
