Housing Sold out before 4:20 PM EST
Posted by jchamlin

I'm on the housing portal, my timeslot was 4:20 PM EST, and it shows no hotel availability at all for a 4 night stay (Wed-Sun). I tried various other date ranges and still nothing. It says "We couldn't find any results for your search". Did housing really sell out already or is this a bug?

Yep, sold out about 30 minutes ago around 4:00 EST. There were 1 or 2 very far away that would pop up and go away.

There are some outlier hotels that are available with decent rates. For example, the Candlewood Suites Indianapolis East, which is in the same area as the "east site" hotels in the block, has rooms for 4 nights starting Wednesday starting at $163 plus taxes/fees. You need to book directly through the hotel.

Don't forget that:

  1. Over the next few months, people will drop their hotels for any number of reasons (consolidating with friends who got a more desirable spot, life/work/finances make them have to bow out, etc.). You can track hotel availability here: genconhotels.com  Mind you, it seems people have bots working, so rooms that open up are often snatched up quickly, but sometimes humans beat the bots!
  2. There are still other hotels, not in the block, available, and some of these are quite reasonably prices. Look on booking sites and check out by the airport as well as to the north and northwest (near 465). You will have to drive or Uber/Lyft/taxi/bus in, but the overall cost can well be less than being downtown.
  3. When the event sign-up happens (in May), a number of people rage quit because they didn't get their "must have" event, and this causes some rooms to open up.
  4. At the end of May (May 27th), people who decide finally not to go have to give up their rooms to avoid paying a full night's stay, rather than a $50 cancellation fee.

So, there are rooms in the area now, and there will be future possibilities of getting a room in the housing block. Don't give up hope!

I just noticed a few minutes ago there's a Wednesday-Sunday Embassy Suites room or rooms. Not sure how long it will be there though.

Re: Beating the Bots.

Gencon adjascent...

I also attend KPop concerts, and the insanity around scoring tix with the Clusterfudge that is the Ticketmaster scam/army of bots buying everything up is legendary.

Still, a couple years back, after having picked up nosebleed tix to my favorit group (Twice!), a friend and I were looking at the Floor/Orchestra tix, going for 3-8000 each, and 2 regular-priced ($235 iirc) just popped-up in that section, and a few others.  Venues release a few reserved tix/day, as rich/famous folks confirm not-attending, etc... I grabbed them, even as Bots descended upon the others. It seriously felt like a Matrix scene, with those murder-machines coming.

So anyways, keep checking back! Rooms *do* get released into the mix.

I have to play beat the bots on Wednesday for Xikers tickets to get decent tickets.  Above all odds I actually got front row for Oneus once on Ticketmaster.   Still don't know how that happened.

Guessing we won't have 2 KPop concerts in town this year during Gen Con.

Thanks for joining my Kpop Gen Con talk...
