Hey, if you add a friend are you automatically added to their friend lists as well or do they have to send a friend request back to me as well?

i think it’s the latter, but I’m not getting the option to approve 

You definitely need to go both directions.  And I have never successfully gotten that bidirectional friendship request to work the first time, so you might just want to try again :)
